Crime

Crime is the great scourge of a civilised society. The cost of crime is not just the damage done by criminals but the huge expense and effort we have to put into protecting ourselves from it.

I was elected on a manifesto promise to recruit 20,000 more police officers in England and Wales. That target has been met, with over 210 new officers in Wiltshire.

Crime is coming down overall but that’s no comfort to individual victims. And for too long the police in Wiltshire failed to deter or detect crime properly. Fittingly the force was placed in special measures.

Since the election of the Conservative Police and Crime Commissioner Philip Wilkinson in 2021 the management, culture and performance of Wiltshire Police has started to improve markedly. Action on sexual assault and domestic abuse has increased sixfold. All burglaries are now attended and investigated by the police, and 999 response times have halved. Wiltshire Police is now the top performing force in the country for responding to car crime and for drug and county line disruptions. 86% of victims report they are satisfied by the actions of the police.

I am particularly concerned about rural crime. People living in isolated communities, and dependent on expensive assets - cars, farming machinery - for their livelihoods, are especially vulnerable to burglary. And like rural communities across the country we suffer from the damage done by the appalling crime of illegal hare coursing, perpetrated by organised criminal gangs who make large sums of money from people watching their hunts and gambling online.

As Philip told me in the video above, he is leading the national effort to combat hare coursing and we are seeing robust action here in Wiltshire.

Statement on ‘Plan B’ Covid restrictions

I have had a difficult time making my mind up how to vote this evening on the latest measures to combat Covid-19 (instructions on face masks; a requirement for a vaccine if you work in the NHS; a requirement to show a negative test or proof you are vaccinated to go to a big venue).

My thoughts on No.10 situation and new restrictions

I have unsurprisingly received a very large number of emails about the parties (or not-parties) at 10 Downing Street last Christmas, and about the introduction of new restrictions affecting public gatherings and workplaces.

Business Question - 9 December, 2021

This morning I asked the Leader of the House in Business Questions, if he shares my concern at the restrictions including compulsory vaccines for all workers introduced in New York and will he ensure Parliamentary time ahead of any further restrictions in the UK.

My thoughts on Social Care

Since the Government announced its new plan for adult social care and how it would be funded earlier this month I have received a number of emails from constituents on the topic. These responses are mixed – with some for and some against.

My visit to Age UK Wiltshire

I had the pleasure of meeting a group of older people and their carers, and staff from Age UK, at Devizes Town Hall today. They explained the enormous challenges that people face in navigating the social care system, which is not simply underfunded but impossibly complicated.

Work to start on Devizes Health Centre this month - 19 May, 2021

I am so pleased to hear from Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire Clinical Commissioning Group this morning that work can now start on the Devizes Health Centre, a project which has been in discussion for a long time and will provide real value to residents of Devizes.
