British Army in Wiltshire

I am proud to represent the constituency with the largest number of British soldiers in the country. 20,000 serving personnel are stationed in the camps and garrisons at Tidworth, Netheravon, Bulford, Larkhill, Perham Down and Upavon.

In recent years the armoured brigades have been successfully repatriated from Germany and I'm glad that the military and civilian communities around the Plain have integrated so happily.

Army accommodation in our area continues to improve. Nevertheless there is still not enough high-standard housing, or housing big enough, for Army families. I have campaigned for improvements here and I am hopeful that the new accommodation offer that the Government is planning will see real progress.

My overall concern - perhaps the most important issue we face as a country - is that our national defence is simply not strong enough for the tasks we may require of it in the years ahead. After the Cold War we thought we had a 'peace dividend', and steadily defunded the Armed Forces. Now we are scrambling to rearm, and I commend the Government for the very significant additional investment we have seen, with the defence budget growing by 30% since 2019 - from £38 billion to £51 billion. We are now spending around 2.25% of GDP on defence, which is a lot more than most of our European allies.

But it is still not enough.

I have campaigned vigorously for additional spending - as well as for reform of the MOD procurement process which sees so much of the current budget waste - and I will continue to do so.

Speech on the need for investment in defence - 21 March 2024

My speech in perhaps the most important debate this Parliament: are we ready for war? Recent Defence Committee and Public Accounts Committee reports show we are not.  Government is investing significantly in aspects of defence. But our overall spending is still far too low.

Changes to how Army housing is allocated - 27 February, 2024

I'm very pleased to hear the news that the Government is rethinking its plans to change the way Army housing is allocated.  The plans would have meant allocations were based on how many children a member of the Armed Forces has, rather than on their rank AND family size, which is the current s

Defence OPQs - The water supply at Trenchard Lines, Upavon - 19 February, 2024

Today I asked the Minister of State for Defence Procurement for an update on the water supply at Trenchard Lines barracks in Upavon, after it became contaminated by diesel in November. Water to the site is still being provided by tanker by Ancala Water Services, but I am pleased they are working on

Campaigning on the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme - 21 December, 2023

Earlier this year a number of constituents wrote to me to raise concerns about discrepancies in the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme.  150,000 members of the Armed Forces community receive military compensation awarded by the Government in response to injury or disablement when serving in HM A

I wrote this last night before the reshuffle started! I’ll follow up on that in due course. Danny The best and worst of Britain was on display this weekend. I argued in advance that the pro-Palestine march should not be allowed to go ahead on Armistice Day.
