A number of Constituents continue to receive hugely increased bills from Thames Water for the coming year. Having written to Thames Water to ask about the price rises and the difference in information between Ofwat and these letters, the reply hasn't helped to clarify much, so I have written again, asking for further details.
Unfortunately, the woes continue for Thames Water. I'm am sure you will have also heard the news that Thames Water have appealed the decision to limit their price increases over the coming years by Ofwat. I understand there is a £4 billion shortfall between what they want, and what Ofwat has allowed. It is now up to the Competition and Markets Authority to investigate and rule on.
This comes as they are also investigated for failing to deliver on promised environmental schemes having announced it would not be able to complete around 100 of their 812 schemes.
In Parliament, there is a debate on potential ownership structures for Thames Water next week. If I can make it will attend if I am not needed in the Constituency. However, I am not an advocate for 100% public ownership - we seem to forget its terrible performance, both financial and environmental, that led to it being privatised with a substantial debt written off in the process. It could also see tax payers foot the bill for future investment or under performance. There is no doubt our water industry needs substantial investment and improvement - how to make it as painless as possible for the tax payer is the question we all seek an answer to.
