Following a recent meeting with Network Rail’s Level Crossing Manager at the site of the tragic incident involving a lady attempting to cross the track, I am pleased to share positive news.
Network Rail’s maintenance teams have been out at the crossing, repainting the yellow lines and installing updated signage, warning walkers with dogs (who would ordinarily use the currently closed footbridge and are, consequently, unaccustomed to this route) of the potential perils.
Most importantly, action has been taken in direct response to concerns addressed by local residents relating to the time between the whistle board point and actually being able to see the train as it comes round the bend on the down line. Now, I am reliably informed, an additional whistle board has been put in place on the track, which should mean that trains sound the horn twice on approach.
I am pleased to hear Network Rail is concentrating efforts on safety at the crossing and I will continue to hold them accountable to sticking to the timeframe for repairs to the footbridge.
