Further to the tragedy on the level crossing at Pewsey in February, when a lady walking her dog was struck by a train while crossing the track, I am pleased to confirm my discussions last week with Network Rail, concerning repairs to the nearby footbridge, have led to positive progress.
Having been closed for repairs since last summer, I am reliably informed that a contract was confirmed with Balfour Beatty to replace the bridge last Tuesday. Work on building a whole new structure is set to begin, off site, later this month, with the bridge being moved to the site of the old one, over Hollybush Lane, in late May. As it stands, the proposed date for demolishing the existing bridge will be overnight May 30/31 and installation of the new bridge is scheduled for June 6/7 (again with work being done overnight).
Network Rail assures me they will be sending letters out to the community to let them know about the bridge demolition and installation and will do their best to maintain access for homes on Hollybush Lane, though there may be a few minutes delay while they move machines around.
Historically, communications with Network Rail on this matter have been poor. This tragedy has been felt very deeply in the community and there is a good deal of anger still among many local residents. I would like to think the proposed timeframe of works will help start to restore some faith between the community and Network Rail.
